We've worked really hard to learn how to write essays based on reading non-fiction text. We are WRITING NINJAS! We are able to write 5-paragraph informational essays and persuasive essays. We can come up with a three-part thesis statement in about a minute!

For our January book reports (due February 4th), we did oral presentations using 7-10 items in a bag. We had to practice telling fluent stories about what happened in the books we read.
For December's monthly book report, we made our own games. The game had to show the title, author, theme, protagonist/antagonist, and events from the story. Other than that, games had to be complete, colorful, neat, and creative. We had a great day playing the games students made. I'm almost looking forward to our next indoor recess when we can play again. Here are just a few of our awesome creations! For our November book report, we wrote 16-24 line poems using a rhyme scheme. It was a bit tricky trying to describe our books and rhyme at the same time, but we did well. Here are some samples:

Our second book report was a map. We had to illustrate and explain the beginning, rising action, climax, and falling action of a book we read independently this month. We even used the map key.
We've been learning a bit about the American Revolution in Language Arts. We're reading about the Declaration of Independence, the Battles of Trenton and Princeton, and the Turtle submarine used in the Revolution.
We've been practicing our drama skills as well as our reading expression. Students were asked to present the poem we read in class called "In 1776". I took clips of their presentations and compiled them into the following video... I thought you might be interested in seeing some of our writing. I really enjoyed the student's creativity! Our first journal was to write a goodbye letter to summer: Here are some other examples of our writing: We started the year by learning about the 6 (+1) Traits of Writing shown above. We had a hot dog party to assess and celebrate our learning (which sadly, I didn't get photos of)! The mnemonic VIP Cows helps us keep all the traits straight.

1. read about and done group presentations on Shakespeare's life 2. studied facts, watched short videos, and answered questions about history, customs, and dress in the Elizabethan Age 3. discovered the meanings of many of the phrases we use today that were originally made-up by Shakespeare 4. learned about the Theater in Shakespeare's day and created mini-models of the Globe Theater 5. read and acted out parts of the story of this year's play - "The Comedy of Errors." 6. practiced our acting skills of being loud, clear, having expression, and adding motions to help tell the story Look below for just a few examples of our work! We just completed our first monthly book report of the year-- neckties! In the novel we read as a class, called Stargirl, by Jerry Spinelli, the main character collects porcupine neckties.
