JA BizTown
Junior Achievement runs a FABULOUS program for 5th graders in the Salt Lake area! Students become "adults for the day" and run mock businesses with the goal of paying off their business loans and making a profit by the end of the day. Before we go to JA City in December, we spend about 6 weeks learning so that we can successfully run JA City on the top floor of Discovery Gateway.
During Social Studies, Mrs. Sheffield introduces:

In Math, Mrs. Redmon discusses:

In Language Arts, Mrs. Hall teaches:

Working in business teams, students learn about the importance of pricing goods and services to make a profit and the factors that affect the selling price. After talking about the importance of advertising and marketing, our 5th graders produce ads for their businesses. Student business teams review their best practices for a quality business, make final preparations for their visit to JA BizTown, and complete a philanthropy commitment pledge to help their community.
BizTown is always one of our favorite days of the year because it drives home an understanding of the adult world and how it works! The students LOVE being adults for the day and most of them wish they could spend a week there instead of just a day.
