In math each time we learn a new concept, we take notes in our math journals to help us remember. Here are just a few examples:

Each year, the Peer Leadership Team (student council) decides on a few school-wide "Spirit Days." Our first Spirit Day this year was Crazy Hair Day this past Friday, October 14th. We saw a lot of very creative hairdos! Here's just some of what we've been up to in Social Studies... 1. We can name and map all 50 states! Ask us! 2. We're in the middle of an explorers simulation with our own ships and crews. Due to theft, limited resources, scurvy, and a host of other problems, many explorers will not make it to the New World. 3. Since this is the year for the U.S. Presidential Election, we're starting our election unit. We're interested to learn about how our government chooses the next President and get to see the outcome of this year's election. Our first science unit in 5th grade is GEOLOGY! We've learned about the rock cycle and the three types of rocks. More recently, we've studied Earth's changing surface. Continental drift/plate tectonics sure does make life on this planet interesting! This week we worked in groups to describe and make salt dough models of some of Earth's interesting geological processes.
We've been working hard on this year's Shakespeare play-- Much Ado About Nothing! As part of our study and preparation for our play, we learned about the life and times of Shakespeare and Queen Elizabeth.
Fun facts:
Did you know that Shakespeare created about one-third of the words and phrases he used in his plays and sonnets? In fact, he invented over 2000 words and expressions. We use many of them today! Although we may have had to change the date of our field trip TWICE due to unpredictable fall weather, we finally made it to Cecret Lake. We could not have asked for a nicer day "at school"! Both on the hike and once we arrived at the lake, students worked on geology assignments, a descriptive paragraph, writing their own fraction word problems, and sketching a landscape painting. We started the year with some fun writing projects including:
Click below to see examples! We can't believe the school year is over already. We've made a lot of memories, worked hard, grown, and had fun. Here's what we thought of the year in our own words... |
